Week 17

I know, I haven't posted picks in quite a while and I'm not sure why. We have some really big games this week, mostly in the AFC where everything is still open. There still isn't a 1 or 2 seed in the AFC, that could be the Pats or the Ravens. There is no winner of the North or West. The NFC has 3 out of 4 divisions won already but the seeding is still to be determined. The Packers have the 1 seed locked and right now the Niners are holding the 2 but could lose it to New Orleans. There is no winner of the East yet, and the Lions and Falcons have locked the Wild Card spots but we don't know which is 5 and which is 6.
I am only posting the games that mean something today, I don't really care about Philly/Washington or Colts/Jags those are meaningless games.

Detroit Lions(10-5)at Green Bay Packers(14-1)- Now, this game is somewhat meaningful. Do the Lions really care if they play the 3 or 4 seed team next week? I think they do. The 3 seed right now is New Orleans and the 4 will either be NY or Dallas, I'm 100% sure the Lions would rather go to Dallas than New Orleans. Will the Packers go all out? They know they'll have a week off already so how long do they keep Rodgers in? Do they want to stick it to Detroit and make sure they have to get beat down by the Saints next week? Is there hate between these teams like when last season ended with Bears/Packers? I don't know, but I do know that I like the Lions to get some revenge on the Pack for coming into Detroit on Thanksgiving and embarrassing them. The problem with the Lions is, they have all the skills of the elite teams but they're stupid and young. They make a lot of mistakes and stupid penalties but if they pull it together (which they have lately) they can be unstoppable. I'm taking Lions to get lucky with some Packers resting. Lions 27-21.

San Francisco 49ers(12-3)at St.Louis Rams(2-13)- The Niners need to just win this game to lock up the 2 seed and get a week off. I don't see the Rams giving that much resistance. San Fran may struggle a bit on offense but they'll get it done. SF 23-16.

New York Jets(8-7)at Miami Dolphins(5-10)- The Jets are pretty much out of the playoffs. They need to win this game and have Cinci,Tenn and Oakland all lose. They won't get past the first step. Sorry Rex, but your team isn't very good and the Phins are playing great lately. Miami 24-21.

Buffalo Bills(6-9)at New England Patriots(12-3)- I thought this would be a big game 8 weeks ago, but the Bills have fallen apart. The Pats have gotten by with a horrible defense thanks to Brady and Welker. Pats lock up the 1 seed and get home field throughout the playoffs. Patriots 33-24.

Carolina Panthers(6-9)at New Orleans Saints(12-3)- The Panthers have to be happy. They have exceeded all expectations by winning more than 2 games. Cam Newton has looked good and the Panthers can score some points, but what about that defense? The Saints average 30 points at home and it won't change here. The Saints get to 13 wins and don't get a bye, that's how good the good teams have been this season. Saints 34-28.

Tennessee Titans(8-7)at Houston Texans(10-5)- Here's a good game. The Titans can make the playoffs if they beat the Texans and the Bengals lose to the Ravens. Before the Texans lost their QB I thought they could win the AFC and go on to Indy to face the Packers, but now they have Jake Delhomme and TJ Yates....yikes. I think with the 3 seed locked they rest some players. This game means nothing to the Texans, they are the 3 seed and cannot move up or down, but to the Titans this is everything. I like Locker, I like the Titans defense against a bad Texans offense. Titans get the win(and maybe something more) 26-17.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers(4-11)at Atlanta Falcons(9-6)- Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Falcons are a wild card team but the same thing plagues them as does the Lions. Do they want that 6 seed and be in New Orleans next week? I think the Falcons would actually love to be in NO, but they still don't want to lose to the Bucs. I don't think they rest anyone, they go at Tampa full force until the game is out of reach. I like the Falcons to win but still get the 6 seed because the Lions beat the Pack.
Falcons win in a close match 24-20.

Baltimore Ravens(11-4)at Cincinnati Bengals(9-6)- Okay, here is the Ravens problem. They lead the North, but the Steelers are playing the Browns and are also 11-4. The Ravens have beaten Pitt twice this year and right now are holding the 2 seed and a bye week. If they lose to the Bengals and Pitt wins the Ravens go from a home playoff game with a week off to playing in Denver/Oakland as a Wild Card. That would be a huge and devastating drop. Meanwhile, the Bengals control their own playoff destiny and need to win to get in. If they lose...they better hope the Jets, Titans and Raiders all lose too. I really think the Titans are going to be the last Wild Card team and the Ravens will win the AFC North en route to a AFC title (yes, I'm going back to Baltimore for my AFC winner). Ravens cannot let this game get away from them, this may be the best game of the week (better than NY/Dallas) Ravens win 23-17.

Pittsburgh Steelers(11-4)at Cleveland Browns(4-11)- The Steelers are a wild card as of now. They are the 5 team and will travel to Denver/Oakland next week unless...well, I just went through this already. I don't see the Browns being an issue. Steelers 31-20.

Kansas City Chiefs(6-9)at Denver Broncos(8-7)- A Tebow win makes the improbable Broncos the winners of the AFC West, they can still win it with a loss but the Raiders would have to lose too. The Chiefs have Kyle Orton at the helm and I'm sure he'd love to stick it to the Broncos in Denver and show them what they missed. I like it. Just, I'm not sure who I like to win, so for the first time ever I'm not picking a winner I'm picking a 23-23 OT tie. I know, I suck...nah, just kidding. I'm drinking the Tebow juice and taking the Broncos to win 26-23 in OT.

San Diego Chargers(7-8)at Oakland Raiders(8-7)- In Norv Turners last game as Head Coach of the San Diego Chargers, he could end the Raiders playoff hopes. If Oakland wins (and Denver wins) they could still be a Wild Card if the Bengals and Titans both lose. They have a tie breaker over the Jets so that game means nothing to them. I'm taking the Raiders, they'll get to 9 wins but won't get the playoff spot because the Titans will. Raiders 28-24.

Dallas Cowboys(8-7)at New York Giants(8-7)- Hard to believe that the NFC East has been just as bad as the AFC West. The Giants are 2-5 in their last 7 games and can win the division and be hosting the Falcons/Lions next week. Stunner. I don't think they have a chance, I think the Cowboys dominate this game from start to finish. Why you ask? I have picked to Giants to win 10 times this year and they have won 4 of those games. I'm not picking them anymore, ever. Also, the Giants are horrible at home and they are horrible against the Cowboys at home every year. They would have a better shot of winning if it was in Dallas. Cowboys win the game and the NFC East with a 34-21 win.

Playoff scenarios

For the locals; Jets need a lot of help, Giants just need a win. Pats just need to beat Buffalo and get the 1 seed.
Most likely the Jets won't make the playoffs, they need 3 teams to lose. The Giants and Cowboys play on Sunday Night for the NFC East and final playoff spot.

NFL Scheduling

I know, I've been missing out on picks. Its been a loooong few weeks.
Anyway, I wanted to go through the rules for making an NFL Schedule because they were talking about it on the radio and someone asked why the Giants had such a hard schedule. It wasn't much harder than any other NFC East team, because essentially, except for two games every team in a division has the same opponents. The Giants got killed because they came in 2nd in the NFC East last year...here's how.

The first 6 opponents are divisional..
Giants had Dallas,Philadelphia and Washington (one home, one away).

Then, each NFC division goes head to head with another NFC division. This year the East played the West. So, Philly,Washington,Dallas and NY all played San Fran, Seattle, St.Louis and Arizona.

Then, each NFC division goes head on with an AFC division. This year it was East vs. East.

So, for 14 games every team in the NFC East has the same opponent. This makes tie breakers that much easier.
Now, the last two games are based on where you finished the year before. The Giants were 10-6 and 2nd in the NFC East..the two NFC divisions left were the North and South. The second place teams last year were the Packers(North) and Saints(South). Since the Eagles won the East they got the winners of those divisions last year, the Bears and Falcons.

I can tell you all but 2 of the Giants opponents for the years, just depends on who's home and who's away. The NFC East plays the NFC South next year, and the AFC North. So, NY will have to face New Orleans again and if the Giants win the East this Sunday it means they'll have to face the Packers again next year as well as the 49ers.
People were claiming that Indy could go 16-0 next year because their schedule will be so soft, but that's not true. Only two games will be guaranteed to be against division basement dwellers.

I will do picks and playoff scenarios later in the week.

Week 15

For some reason, my week 14 picks went missing. I never checked back on them but apparently they didn't post. Arg. Oh well, onward and upward

This week we had a Thursday matchup which I had taken the Falcons (1-0) and a Saturday game in which I took the Cowboys (2-0) so, I'm off to a good start.

Miami Dolphins(4-9)at Buffalo Bills(5-8)- Tony Sparano is out. Even tho the Phins have played hard the last 5 weeks and got beat by a healthy Eagles team they fired him a few weeks early. The same could happen to Gailey if he can't get his Bills off this 6 game slide. New coach, new life. Miami 23-21.

Seattle Seahawks(6-7)at Chicago Bears(7-6)- Have the Bears given away their playoff hopes by not picking up free agent QB Donovan McNabb? Donovan hoped to play in Chicago when he asked to be released by the Vikes but the Bears declined, and so has the play of the team. After being 'Tebowed' last week the Bears look to get back on track against a hot Seattle team that is trying to get to 9-7. I like Bears at home even with no QB or RB. Chicago 17-16.

Tennessee Titans(7-6)at Indianapolis Colts(0-13)- The Colts can lock up the #1 pick with a loss here, and get the Luck vs. Manning story really going. Titans are trying to catch up to the Jets and take that last Wild Card spot. I think Locker is playing and I like him to lead the Titans. Titans 27-21.

Green Bay Packers(13-0)at Kansas City Chiefs(5-8)- Chiefs will now have Romeo Crennell calling the shots at Head Coach, and they can play some defense. They just can't score and the Pack may allow a lot of yards but they get turnovers. Chiefs may hang for a little while but Pack goes 14-0 with a 30-13 win.

Cincinnati Bengals(7-6)at St.Louis Rams(2-11)- What happened to the Bengals? What happened to the Rams? The Bengals have lost their grip on a playoff spot and will need to win today (they'll get help from a certain green NY team that will lose today). I've got a feeling about the Rams getting this upset, and I can't shake it. Rams 26-23.

New Orleans Saints(10-3)at Minnesota Vikings(2-11)- The Saints can grab the #2 seed and get homefield if they can beat the Vikes. The thing is, the Saints kinda have this road upset lose reputation even though they have 10 wins. I don't see it this week. Saints 28-19.

Washington Redskins(4-9)at New York Giants(7-6)- The Giants are now a half game back and need to win to take the top spot back from Dallas. The Skins beat the Giants in Week 1 28-14 and the Giants looked sloppy and played like crap. This week, they are at home and know they have to win out to win the NFC East and have a shot at the playoffs. I don't like picking sweeps in divisional games so I'm taking the Giants in a closer battle than you may think. The Giants offense has been on fire lately, basically scoring at will and Washington is beat up on defense. Giants will go over 30 points again in a 35-27 win.

Carolina Panthers(4-9)at Houston Texans(10-3)- At 10 wins and without their QB the Texans may be a quick out in the playoffs but I like them against the weaker teams they'll be facing these weeks. The Panthers can score some points, but the D isn't great. Meanwhile, the Texans are playing lights out on defense but D Coordinator Wade Phillps is out with surgery. Still, Texans 27-23.

Detroit Lions(8-5)at Oakland Raiders(7-6)- I am shocked by the Raiders losing grip of the AFC West, and what happened to the Lions? They are not playing very smart right now. They bought into their own hype and are playing sloppy, dirty football. Now the Raiders host the new Raiders, the new most penalized team. I like the Raiders at home, I think the Lions are going to have to give 130% to win this one. Things get interesting in the NFC if the Lions lose here and even more interesting with the Broncos playing New England and the Chargers trying to win out to 9-7.
I'm taking things to get VERY interesting with a Raiders 30-27 win.

New England Patriots(10-3)at Denver Broncos(8-5)- I like how this is being pumped up as Brady vs. Tebow. I guess not having the Manning v Brady this year has left us starved (although Eli did fill in that role this year(and won)). The Pats defense is not good, the offense is. The Denver offense is not good, the defense is. This game could be very, very, very interesting. I like Tebow, he is reinventing the QB as we watch. Still, with the chance to get the #1 seed I like Brady to lead his Pats to a very close win. Patriots 23-20.

New York Jets(8-5)at Philadelphia Eagles(5-8)- The Eagles think they can win the NFC East, but they need the Giants to lose today, no matter what Philly does a NY win knocks them out of the playoff picture. I think the Eagles do get to .500 with games against the Jets,Cowboys and Redskins. That's right. Eagles over the Jets, who I don't think have the talent to hang with the Eagles, 30-21.

Cleveland Browns(4-9)at Arizona Cardinals(6-7)- The Cards are also hoping on getting to 9-7 and possibly grabbing the last playoff spot in the NFC. They need a lot of help, but it could happen. It starts here, with a 27-13 win over the Browns.

Baltimore Ravens(10-3)at San Diego Chargers(6-7)- Phillip Rivers is 22-2 in games in December. The Ravens are prone to let downs. History repeats with a 30-24 win for the home team.

Pittsburgh Steelers(10-3)at San Fransisco 49ers(10-3)- If the Ravens lose and Pitt wins they will take over the AFC North and have a shot at the #1 seed. Big Ben is injured and no one knows when he will play, maybe this week, maybe next. Meanwhile the Niners have temporarily lost the 2 seed in the NFC and need to keep pace with New Orleans. They also need to prove they can beat the big teams. I like San Fran to win here in a super tight match up. I think Ben sits out and SF gets a 23-21 win.

Ah, Thursday forgotten again...

The Seahawks handled the Eagles last night and I forgot all about it. I was taking the Seahawks, because I like them at home against East Coast teams but I kept putting off posting it. Dammit.
I had Seattle winning 24-17, which may have happened if not for that 70+ yard pick six.
Eagles, one loss away from a losing season. I love it.
